Cancer Campaign
(Click
on a heading for more information)
Optimists
sponsor several programs for kids with cancer and their families, and
support research to find a cure. One such camp is Camp Coco, which is
held at Timber Pointe Outdoor Conference Center on Lake Bloomington, Bloomington,
IL. Another cancer camp for kids supported by Optimists is Camp One Step,
which is held at Aurora University on Lake Geneva, Williams Bay, Wisconsin.
Youth
Appreciation Week
Many
Optimist clubs recognize students who perform civic projects without being
asked. Kids are given public recognition, in recognition ceremonies and
in the local media.
Communication
Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CCDHH)parties
The
CCDHH contest provides an opportunity for young people who are deaf and
hard
of hearing to communicate in a public forum while developing valuable
skills and
confidence. The Optimist International Foundations annually fund a $2,500
scholarship for each Optimist International District.
Oratorical
Contest
As
Optimist International's oldest program, this contest allows young adults
to gain
experience in public speaking on a pre-assigned topic. Optimist Districts
have the
opportunity to provide two $2,500 scholarships to the winners.
Kids
Speak Out
This
program prepares elementary children for future Oratorical competitions.
Although winners are normally selected, emphasis is placed on making all
contestants
feel like a winner just for participating.
